The authorities of Ijede Local Council Development Area (LCDA), have blamed blockade of waterways and lack of drainage infrastructure for the cause of flash floods being experienced in some parts of the council due to heavy rainfall in several parts of Ikorodu. The rainfall started on Sunday night and only subsided this morning.
The council in a statement by its Public Affairs Unit, listed Igbe Kapo, Igbe Oloja, Oko Ope (Oke Eletu), Oke Oyinbo, Igbopa, Igbe-Ogunro and Ijede Junction as areas affected in Ijede, stating that the Chairman has mobilised the necessary arm of the council to assess the situation and do the needful.

“The root causes identified include blocked drainage channels, the absence of proper drainage infrastructure in some areas, and the indiscriminate building across natural water channels.
“We want to assure residents that the LCDA chairman has already mobilised the Council Engineer and relevant departments to immediately assess and clear obstructions, particularly in the main drainage channels which appear to be overwhelmed or blocked,” the statement said.

It was also revealed that the representative of Ikorodu Constituency II is also liaising with necessary ministries at the state level so as to see to expedition of action on the ongoing drainage construction.
The LCDA chairman, however, charged residents on the need to imbibe environmental discipline by engaging in proper disposal of waste.
“Our House of Assembly Member at Ikorodu Constituency II, Hon.Aro Moshood Abiodun (AMA) is also coordinating with the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, on an ongoing drainage project in parts of the affected axis. It is just unfortunate that this ugly incident occurred while the project is still on. We will work together to expedite actions around the delivery of the project hoping it will lead to a lasting solution around the corridor.

“Residents are reminded to avoid blocking drainage systems, dumping waste in gutters, or building on designated water channels. A renewed community-wide consciousness around proper waste disposal and urban planning is essential to long-term flood prevention.
“We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work swiftly to resolve these issues. Safety and well-being remain our top priorities.
“Together, we will achieve more.”
